Tuesday, 13th June 2023: WAE Technologies (WAE), the world-leading technology and engineering services business, has recently launched Elysia, its Battery Intelligence software designed to unlock significant improvements in the life, safety, usable energy, power, and recharge times of any battery system. The announcement comes as the Elysia software is shown at the Electrical Energy Storage (EES) show in Munich from 14th-16th June.

Elysia brings game-changing battery insight, management, and optimisation of batteries to the home and grid level energy storage market for the first time. Elysia draws on WAE’s unrivalled experience in high-performance batteries, gleaned from the sole supply of batteries to ground-breaking electric motorsport series, as well as the design and development of batteries for electric hypercars and 1.4 MWh packs for 250 tonne mining trucks.

This unique expertise, amassed over more than a decade at the apex of battery advancement, has seen WAE push the limits of performance, longevity and charging in the harshest environments on the planet – with software playing a vital role.

Elysia is the first mass market software offering from WAE, combining a suite of innovations that can unlock the true potential of any battery.

Elysia features state-of-the-art embedded and cloud-based products which together provide customers – including global BESS OEMs, operators, and battery asset financiers – with not only unprecedented access to battery insights, but the ability to manage, optimise and enhance performance across the battery’s entire lifecycle,

Furthermore, the improved insight and control provided by Elysia, enables service stacking, increasing ROI without negatively impacting safety or lifespan.

The core offering is based around two key products:

Elysia Embedded is a suite of state-of-the-art battery management algorithms, which run locally on the Battery Management System (BMS). Its best-in-class BMS algorithms help OEMs to increase usable energy, enable faster charging, and maximise battery power, enabling them to maximise ultisation of the battery asset and enable greater flexibility in the services the battery can deliver, without compromising safety or battery life.

Whereas conventional battery management systems traditionally require extensive data from testing and limits specified by cell suppliers to build software that controls how the battery is used, Elysia Embedded’s algorithms offers customers the ability to unleash untapped potential through intelligent ‘physics-informed’ models. Whilst this approach has formed an integral part of WAE’s motorsport capability, these algorithms have been designed to run on standard low-cost chips as typically found in mass-market battery management systems. In applications to date, this has shown the ability to bring up to a 30% increase in battery life and 10% potential increase in battery usable capacity, whilst also enabling dramatically reduced fast charge times and higher peak power output when compared to traditional battery management algorithms.

Elysia Cloud Platform is a cloud-based system which uses proprietary digital twin technology. It helps OEMs, battery energy storage operators and asset financiers turn data into actionable insights, designed to enable these customers to forecast and extend battery life. By providing a complete picture of the battery’s state of health, it brings much-needed unparalleled accuracy in tracking and reducing degradation, as well as increasing revenue, by enabling service stacking on top of the original purpose of the battery storage facility.

The Elysia cloud platform gives the ability to forecast life accurately and operate batteries well below 80% state of health, maximising return on investment. The software can also assist in-life fault-finding, allowing preventative actions to avoid already rare thermal events.

Elysia is built upon a unique combination of AI and data science, fused with electrochemical modelling expertise, whilst being grounded in unrivalled real-world battery engineering and development experience.

Elysia Commercial Lead, Joe Jones, said: “We have managed batteries in the most extreme climatic conditions on earth, from 250 tonne mining trucks, hauling hundreds of tonnes of iron ore in 55 degree heat in Australia, to off-road racing on arctic tundra in Extreme E. By comparison the operating environment for a static storage battery are much tamer, but the size, operating locations of the batteries and the value of the assets involved makes managing them properly even more important.

Elysia is now bringing this technology from the racetrack to the stationary storage market, with unique capabilities offering unprecedented insight and foresight, unleashing untapped performance, life and safety to the energy storage market and every battery on the planet.”

He continued:

“We are providing easy to interpret, actionable battery insights to give OEMs and battery asset financiers unprecedented transparency, allowing them to transform the value it delivers over the course of its life through value stacking and increasing the flexibility of the asset. This means we don’t just present data to the battery operator but suggest courses of action in the operation of that asset to avoid issues, whilst also increasing profitability through better asset utilisation.

When batteries are operating within people’s homes or in large grid installations safety is obviously critical and our software allows better performance while also helping to avoid the already rare thermal events, which harm confidence at a consumer and investor level.”

Elysia will be exhibiting on stand B2.478 at the EES show in the Munich Messe from 14th-16th June.
